HTML5 indifference
May 7th, 2009
Nowadays, I’m pretty much indifferent to the HTML5 effort. Several people behind it just have a serious attitude problem, and coincidentally also a view of software engineering that (on certain points) I can not agree with. I’m not alone in having this frustration. A few links regarding recent events:
- BB Realtech: Going Non-Standard — Shelley Powers utters her frustration on the bias and lack of professionalism in certain important and vocal HTML5 working group members.
- CSSquirrel: Comic Update: HTML5 Manners — Kyle Weems elaborates on his most recent comic regarding the same topic.
- Last Week in HTML5 — Mr. Last Week is offensive, he’s spiteful, he’s great! Humorous guerilla journalism that never fails to put the finger on the sore spots.

I share this frustration as well. Although I strongly believe core people around this effort are incredibly smart, the output (“spec”s) doesn’t look good enough. I have many concerns about it, but the major one is that technology is very much inconsistent with itself as well as with many other existing ones. That is also why it looks locked for extensions in a row of directions.
